This year-long course is designed to enhance first-year DFFL undergraduates’ spoken English. It will arm them with the skills and knowledge they need to speak confidently and fluently about a variety of topics and daily-life situations. Every week, participants will have to speak English both in small groups and in front of the class. They will also have to engage in a wide variety of speaking activities inside and outside the classroom, including group discussion, role play, story completion, as well as prepared and impromptu speeches. Through these exercises, students will learn to take notes, speak from fragments and words, and become more spontaneous in expressing themselves. The second semester aims to help students develop their ‘presentation literacy’ highlighted by Chris Anderson in TedTalks, their skills to make small talk and their ability to talk about more complex and abstract topics.
